First-Year Learning Communities: About the Program
The First Year Learning Communities or FYLC provide CHASS freshmen with seats in highly desirable large lecture courses and a means to make the large courses seem smaller and more manageable. Students will have the opportunity to enroll in appropriate Freshman Composition classes with other freshmen from their large lecture thereby forming the smaller FYLC. Students participating in an FYLC will also have the opportunity to work in even smaller freshman groups during their discussion sections.
Pre-Business FYLC (Pre-Business Majors Only)
The Pre-Business FYLC has the same academic structure as all First-Year Learning Communities; the only difference is it also has a Living Learning Subset developed out of a partnership with Housing, Alumni Relations and the Career Center. This community will provide students with introductions to other business-oriented classmates and provide the opportunity to develop key networks and skills necessary to be successful in business. The key component is our Alumni Mentors. The mentors will provide the students with insights about their own successes. They will offer their expertise and insight. In addition, the Career Center will be offering a Certificate in Professional Development.
