Learning Communities

Learning Communities

A learning community builds a community of learners among students, faculty, teaching assistants and peer educators. CHASS F1RST uses a cohort model for the learning community programs. Students start together in the learning community of their choice and move through a set of courses together. The central component of the learning community program is CHFY 007: CHASS F1RST Learning Community Workshop, a 2-unit course. In the workshop, you will adopt new study strategies conducive to succeeding in university level courses, become a more fluent and persuasive writer and thinker, learn how to budget your time, and connect with the many resources and services offered at UCR.

Benefits of participating in a learning community:

  • Greater sense of belonging and motivation
  • Increased student-faculty interaction
  • Development of higher order analytic skills
  • Improves student retention and persistence
  • Guaranteed courses each quarter*

*Number of guaranteed courses varies each quarter depending on which program a student enrolls in.

*CHASS Connect will not be offered in the 2018-2019 Academic Year, but be on the lookout for CHASS Connect for 2019-2020 Academic Year
