About the SYE Program: Professional Development Courses
CHFY 004: Educational Leadership Seminar. (Fall quarter)
The purpose of this 2-unit seminar course is for students to gain personal, academic, and professional development skills to enhance learning on capital internship opportunities, such as UC Washington (UCDC), and Education Abroad. In this course, students will examine what they've learned and how it helped their skills and perspective in life. Students will learn how to market their experience on their resume, cover letter, and interview as well as enhance their knowledge on capital internships and scholarship opportunities. By participating in this course, students will be able to analyze their learning processes, knowledge, and understanding of research by gaining a sense of their own identity.
CHFY 020: Theory and Practice in Peer Instruction. (Spring quarter)
The purpose of this 4-unit course is to provide student leaders with the tools and training to enhance their experience in peer educating. This course explores student leadership development theories, teaching philosophies, student retention, community engaged learning, and research on college transitional issues. Students will learn ethical issues, communication and listening skills and ways to facilitate students' decision making while learning how to be an effective peer educator or transfer ambassador. Students will also work with different forms of pedagogy in order to design and implement workshops and courses for students in transition into the university setting.
CHFY 198I: CHASS F1RST Individual Internship. (Fall, Winter, Spring quarter)
The purpose of this 1–4-unit course is to provide CHASS F1RST student employees with structured leadership development, hands-on experience, and professional mentorship to enhance their skills in student success, program coordination, and peer mentorship. Students will engage and participate in high-impact programs that offer transformative learning experiences. Such as collaborative initiatives, student mentorship, and community-building activities that foster student success. Through this course, students will develop leadership and facilitation skills to support first year and transfer students, gain practical experience in event planning, student engagement, and administrative functions. Students will reflect on their professional growth through guided supervision and self-assessments. Students will learn about CHASS F1RST's mission, pedagogy, and best practices for student success by enhancing communication, teamwork, and problem-solving skills in a higher education setting.
